We just lost one of the most important skateboarders in history and I’m furious because Marc didn’t deserve the end skateboarding gave him.
In 2016 Marc sought a better employment/shoe sponsor situation and did some of it confidentially, which is how most people hunt for jobs before leaving their current employer. It is no one’s business, especially not that of the company you are leaving because they aren’t paying you properly.
Marc was announced on adidas to thunderous applause in the theater at the Away Days premiere, but a few hours later his former sponsor unleashed a slanderous smear campaign of an “interview” (aka called Jenkem and told them to turn on the recorder) to maliciously ruin his career and reputation.
Fuck them all for that. Fuck everyone who distanced themselves from Marc for cool points. Fuck every person who talked shit about, and to Marc online. You all know who you are.
I’ve said it before: The skate industry and community does not understand mental illness, and in many cases, behave in ways that worsen life for those who suffer from it. The Lakai incident and the way the skate community reacted is a perfect example—all because a man was seeking better employment.
The day of the Carroll Jenkem interview, Marc contacted me about doing Weekend Buzz to tell his side of the story. We spoke at length for months and became close. It was a horrible time for him. He’d recently lost his mother, was battling injuries, the Lakai thing happened, then his friend Dylan Rieder passed. Today is Dylan’s birthday, by the way.
Marc and I eventually did a four-part, eight hour interview. Now it is more important than ever to publish so his unfiltered side of the story can be told.
I love you Marc. You are a fucking genius. You impacted my life in more ways than you know, before and after we met. How you were treated in 2016 by a bunch of entitled, emotionally unintelligent brats, bullies and babies was fucking deplorable and you deserved so much better. I hope you are finally resting your mind and at peace. 🕊️🍷💙
