Jerry Hsu and Ryan Lay Continue to Support Gifted Hater / Joa Field Despite Racist, Sexist Rants on SZA and Body Shaming Women

For years, Gifted Hater has disproportionally attacked women & black skaters. These clips of him code switching** while mocking/body shaming SZA/female consumers aren’t from 20 (or even 2) years ago. They’re from August 2025 & last week.

-Gifted Hater is a racist.
-Gifted Hater is a misogynist.
-Gifted Hater repeatedly makes queer-phobic remarks.
-Gifted Hater creates racist, sexist content for hundreds of thousands of viewers to make a living.
-Gifted Hater’s fans harass & dogpile who his abusive, hostile content is about, often sending death threats & suggesting suicide.
-Gifted Hater knows his content incites this harassment.
-Gifted Hater INTENTIONALLY causes harm.
-Jerry Hsu has known this for years & unwaveringly supports Gifted Hater.

No amount of mental/verbal gymnastics or “But he has a black/woman/queer teammates” will circumvent these facts. No opinion on me or anything I’ve done circumvents these facts.

Social justice advocate and professional skateboarder, Ryan Lay, knows this, yet invited Joa to speak on a “journalism” panel at Slow Impact 2025. He remains silent—a friend & teammate to Joa—a coward who lacks conviction, making exceptions for his bro. Here you can see him completely lying about his knowledge of Gifted Hater's content. Somehow he is claiming he is unaware of the content one of his best friends and teammates has been making for the past 5 years ... content that has been the most talked about in recent skateboarding history. Sure thing, Ryan.

The interesting part about Ryan inviting Joa to speak on the panel, is that not more than a few weeks after Joa made an "investigation" video of Chris Cole and his abuse against Christine Flannigan, Joa was live on stream watching an interview with Cole and Paul Rodriguez and making abuse jokes as part of his commentary. Just like the one in the video above. They will be available here soon.

Ryan Lay platformed a racist, sexist streamer who boldly body shames women and makes abuse and queerphobic jokes as a "journalist".

Yes, Ryan Lay is currently endorsed by a major sportswear band, New Balance, while actively platforming and defending a racist streamer. Interesting timing considering the recent racist Converse ad controversy and the very unfortunate events that recently surfaced regarding Cornell University.

The person who provided me with the screenshot below said Ryan reached out to him after it was shared on Instagram

Ryan's alleged statement to him:

"So you screen shot and shared our private DMs with him? Thanks. Do you feel good about that decision?"

Those are not the words of someone who is regretful of his choices or trying to improve. Those are the defensive words of someone who is terribly upset that he was exposed.

Yes Ryan, we are thankful we got to see the person you really are. A racist and misogynist sympathizer. Someone who unwaveringly aligns himself with someone who makes hostile and abusive content that intentionally hurts people.

Professional skateboarder Jerry Hsu & Ryan Lay unapologetically support a racist, misogynist streamer with a very impressionable, predominantly male audience.

No amount of mental or verbal gymnastics will circumvent these facts.

Jerry Hsu & Ryan Lay are as complicit as Jamie Thomas. If I were a sponsor or female partner of theirs, I’d be embarrassed & disgusted. You should be too.

The skate industry fears speaking against Joa. They don’t want what happened to Garrett, Tom Knox, Beatrice Domond, Nora or me happening to them. Many have personally told me their goal is to stay off his radar.

Any media partnering with Sci-Fi Fantasy or Joa by running content & ads, supports this hate. Every Gifted Hater sponsor, follower & subscriber supports this hate. Shops & consumers buying Sci-Fi or Hsu product/books support this hate.

Your dollar & your attention are your voice. Use them wisely.

To the skate industry who stayed silent about Chris Cole, Dane Burman, Nyjah Huston, Jason Jesse, Mike Carroll & more, who still remain silent now—do better, you spineless dorks. I know I’m trying to.

**Yes, adopting a "Black voice" or caricature of African American Vernacular English (AAVE) specifically to make fun of Black people is widely considered racist.

When used in this context, the behavior crosses from natural linguistic shifting into harmful stereotyping. Sociolinguists, cultural critics, and community members view this as problematic for several distinct reasons:

1. It is "Linguistic Blackface," Not Code-Switching

True code-switching is a survival and navigation strategy. Historically, Black Americans and other marginalized groups have had to alter their speech, appearance, and behavior to fit into dominant, white-professional spaces to avoid systemic bias and stereotype threats.

When a non-Black person adopts a "Black voice" solely to mock or ridicule, it is not code-switching. Instead, it is a form of linguistic blackface—using a marginalized group's cultural dialect as a prop or punchline while facing none of the societal penalties associated with it.

2. It Weaponizes Anti-Black Linguistic Racism

AAVE is a legitimate, grammatically complex dialect with its own rules, history, and structure. Mocking it relies on anti-black linguistic racism, which reinforces the false, historical stereotype that Black speech is "lazy," "uneducated," or inherently comedic.

3. Intentional vs. Unintentional Mockery

Linguists recognize a phenomenon called communication accommodation or convergence, where people unconsciously mimic the accent or cadence of those around them to build rapport. However, when someone deliberately shifts into a exaggerated dialect specifically to demean or caricature a racial group, the intent is inherently pejorative and hostile.

Using a racial group's cultural dialect to punch down or make them the butt of a joke relies on historical prejudices. It reduces a diverse, complex group of people to a singular, mocking stereotype, which is the foundational definition of racist behavior.
