Best quotes of '08: Kyle Leeper

Kyle Leeper loves dogs, so much so that his upcoming etnies shoe is named the "Perro," which is Spanish for "dog." It actually happens to be the best-skating etnies shoe for me out of all the new stuff coming out.

One time, in Barcelona, Kyle somehow started explaining his foolproof method for breaking up a dogfight, remembering that, when I was assigned his interview, I had to have him talk about it.

Kyle is one of my favorite people. And the random shit that comes out of his mouth for no reason whatsoever is really funny if you catch it, 'cuz he's quick. Hence the few statements I left in after the dog fight story:

Best quotes of '08: Corey Duffel

Corey is gnarly. Every time I see that dude skate I get scared for his life, but then end up really impressed by what he pulls off. He actually got bummed on me a bit for rehashing some old drama in this piece, but we kissed and made up. I like the dude and it's pretty apparent from the story that despite some old mistakes the kid made, I took an optimistic angle and gave him the benefit of the doubt with the article.

His story about getting hit 'n runned by a priest is pretty classic. And when I say "hit 'n run" I mean, the priest drove over Corey, not just the car Corey was in. So here we go, the full unedited version...

Best quotes of '08: Cara-Beth Burnside

Prior to interviewing Cara-Beth Burnside for TSM's September issue, I got a tip from CB's friend Mimi Knoop that she once had a meltdown and karate kicked the mailboxes in front of her house... for no apparent reason. So naturally, I asked about it.

I don't know about you people, but the thought of watching Cara-Beth (or anyone for that matter) pull up to her house and just randomly get out of the car and assault her mailboxes with cowboy boots on really, really amuses me. I would have paid good money to see such a spectacle.

Best quotes of '08: Sky Ferreira

sky ferreira rob brink quotes

Sky Ferreira is a charming and spunky little pop singer I interviewed earlier in the year. Sadly, 'twas my last piece for Missbehave before severing ties with them after two-and-a-half years of virtually working for free. Seemed the new über-too-cool Editor in Chief that replaced, but will never fill the shoes of, Miss Mary Choi, felt that contacting her Staff Writer "wasn't on her list of priorities" for two month's time while she got herself situated at the mag. But that's another story. Anyway, back to Sky...

Having been part of LA's "club kid" scene and a club promoter by age 16, she's done and seen a lot, but somehow still possesses a very endearing innocence and naïveté. Prior to our interview, I overheard Sky mentioning some interesting tidbits about "creeps" and Biology class to her stylists, so I decided to add 'em into my line of questioning.

Best quotes of '08: Lizzy Caplan

lizzy caplan rob brink quotes

With the conclusion of 2008 upon us, I felt doing one of those cliché "Best of the Year" lists was in order. Rather than drone on with opinions everyone else already has or has heard, about some shit I had nothing to do with, I figured I'd make a list of my personal favorite quotes and tales from the interviews I conducted or had published in 2008. it seems photos, films, music, etc. get lots of attention in skateboarding/popular culture and the articles/stories often get overlooked, so it's kinda my duty to show some love to my favorite genre of media.

I toiled a bit over how to rate these. My favorite might not be that funny or interesting to someone else, ya know? So I'm just going to post them in no particular order and you can hierarchy them for yourself if so inclined. So here it goes, starting with some pop culture stuff.

For the third-to-last issue of Mass Appeal, I interviewed Lizzy Caplan from Cloverfield and Mean Girls. One of my favorite celebrity interviews for sure. Unlike Amber Heard or Jena Malone, who kinda took themselves and the acting thing wayyy too seriously, Lizzy seemed relatable to me. Talking to her didn't feel awkward, but more like typical dinner date dialogue or something. Here she is discussing getting "quoted" for magazines like Maxim, FHM, Stuff, etc.:

2008 Douchebag Awards!

January 1, 2009

affliction brink

I've discovered that having a "Douchebag Awards" on a blog is pretty played... pretty douchey in itself actually. So is a blog full of opinions about skateboarding and such. So there, now I've bagged on myself and cleared a path for me to incessantly talk shit for a few minutes.

I did my first DB Awards in 2006 and have since seen countless other sites, and even Saturday Night Live doing so. I'm not saying people ripped me off... I'm sure someone did it before me even. It's just that shit gets a little too common after a while and you gotta move on. Perhaps I should rename it the Complete and Total Asshole Awards! Or the Absoulte Jerkoff Awards!

Anyway, this year, in a society full of people doing jerkoff things in attempts to get laid or whatever they're trying to accomplish, one thing has stood out so prominently, that it's the lone recipient of the Douchebag, Jerkoff, Complete and Total Asshole Award for 2008.

And the winner is:
