First time in print!

February 18, 2007

My first time in print! Stoked!

Back in the day, Depeche Mode had their own magazine in the UK and it was pretty hard to get a hold of here in the States. For some fuckin' odd reason it was called Bong. I was obsessed with DM back then and joined their fanclub (ok start laughing) and got a free Bong subscription. One month they posed the question:

"What type of artist should open for Depeche Mode on tour now that the band uses non-electronic instruments on stage?"

And that letter above is what I wrote to them. Being they were my favorite band and I was 14, you can bet I was stoked to be in their mag. Why do I put this shit on my site? I have no clue. I think I like to fess up about how corny I was so people can laugh at me...

Imagine...

February 17, 2007

Imagine you're me for a second. Six foot five and having to pee real bad. So you run into the restroom at the nearest dining establishment and you see this lonesome urinal, about six inches off the ground, waiting to be peed in. I'm 31 years old and I've never seen anything like this in my life. Like, why not just put a bucket on the floor? Perhaps just dig a hole for us to piss in? Maybe this is one of them new dog or cat urinals I've been hearing about

Holy Sean Malto!

February 17, 2007

Been watching Badass Meets Dumbass on repeat for a few days now. I'm psyched on it. Two words: Sean fucking Malto. He's making it really hard for me to give two shits about any other ams right now. Sweet soundtrack too. I'm going skating.

Swatch Impact Tour!

February 16, 2007

Does this make me cool or old? Or both? My ticket to the Swatch Impact Tour, three days after my birthday during my eighth grade year. Mark "Gator" Rogowski, Jeff Phillips, Joe Johnson, a rollerskater who rode the vert ramp and a bunch of BMX dudes were on the tour. I remember seeing Per Welinder doing a little freestyle demo out in the parking lot before the show. After the event, we lurked to the back of the arena, waited by the bay doors where the skaters were gonna...

The BMX days & vintage Vinny Ponte!

February 15, 2007

Wilkerson arrives in the Haro van.

I found these photos in the archives (i.e. my closet) and scanned 'em for anyone who might care. They are from before my skate days (like many others back then, BMX kinda ushered me into skateboarding) at a Haro BMX demo and BMX Freestyle contest back in NJ. They are of Ron Wilkerson, Dave Voelker and Dennis McCoy. All three were gods to me back then. I would say this was all about 1987/1988. Can't tell for sure. One of the funniest things, now that I ended up in the skateboard world is I used to see this redhead kid at all the BMX demos I went to in the area back then. A few years later in the 90s I would see him skating in NYC and found out he was Vinny Ponte of Zoo York fame. Then I saw this photo (see above and below) of mine a few years back and I am pretty damn sure that redhead in the photo is Vinny... Anyone wanna confirm this? Vinny, is that you?

BGPs!

February 15, 2007

Here's my first-ever background props in a skateboard mag. Thrasher to be precise. From a demo at the late Premiere skateshop in Wayne, NJ. I'm not even sure what this demo was, but it was mid-nineties during that phase when a ton of mediocre skaters from NYC got a lot of coverage and sponsors...some of them even turned pro. (Calm down, there were some good skaters too.) All of the skate industry from the West Coast wanted a piece of the NYC pie. It was pretty amazing actually. Looking back...those were fun times.

This just in... Morrissey kinda sucks!

February 15, 2007

I know it's almost mandatory hipster fare these days, and I hate to break it to people, but seriously, c'mon... Morrissey really isn't that great. I saw him for the Kill Uncle tour in NJ in 1991. He's not bad or anything, I even have a few albums and love The Smiths, but you people need to calm the fuck down.

Uh oh...

February 14, 2007

Damn! This guy went for it! And he even had the balls to put his name and photo. Remember when more of skateboarding and skateboarders were like this? Now that there's an official World Without Pros backlash, I'm interested to see when and what IASC's plan of attack/retaliation/whatever the term is, is going to be. Found it on SkateDaily!

3 a.m. insomnia

February 13, 2007

Cintra Wilson's first book, A Massive Swelling, was published almost seven years ago (yes, before blogs) and still blows away all these whack, wanna-be irreverent blog sites trying to talk shit on celebs. Cintra is badass, and she's got a Thrasher shirt to boot!

Fittingly, I first heard of Cintra as Howard Stern (the world's other greatest shit talker) was reading one of her infamous post-oscar essays live on the air.
